Friday 25th November- A long weekend in Singleton
The morning was spent preparing for our weekend away. We packed and Tash did a little shopping. Will's Mum Janet phoned to say that the little ford on her road was impassible as it was a torrent at the moment but perhaps it would ease off in a few hours. Who knows? We decided to risk it anyway. Will came home early and by 3 pm we were ready for the off. We had to use two cars and Di and I took the Subaru with Ollie and Toby strapped into their car seats, whilst Tash and Will were in the ute. The drive to Singleton took about two hours but at one point we had to stop to feed Toby. It rained most of the way, heavily on the Central Coast but it eased off as we drove up the Hunter Valley.
When we got to Dyrring Road we were indeed stopped by the torrent which flowed across the road to a depth, according to the depth gauge, of 0.4 m. Braveheart Will decided to go for it and leaving Tash with us, he drove the ute slowly and steadily straight through. We decided that the low profile Subaru was not up to it and so we waited. Will drove the last mile to Janet's and soon returned with her Landcruiser which, of course, had no problem with the little ford. We quickly transferred all the luggage and locked up the Subaru, leaving it at the side of the unmade road. We drove through the ford and on to the next which was far bigger. Will admitted that the Ute had slipped a bit here and had his heart in his mouth for a few seconds until it gained traction. The Toyota, however, had no such trouble and soon we were pulling up outside Janet's "old house" where she was waiting to greet us.
We had dinner together in the old house and settled down for the night with the rain still hammering on the roof.
